Sufjan Stevens Illinois Zip Lines

I've been listening to Sufjan Stevens the last couple of months, especially when I'm studying. I really appreciate his music but find some of it to be a little under-stimulating, especially some of the songs that are heavily ambient. The one track so far that I love is 'The Only Thing' from Carrie & Lowell, for both its lyricism and its composition. If I'm looking to find songs that are similar in their lyrical and melodic complexity, are there any of Sufjan's songs in particular that you could recommend to me? It’s Sufjan at his most emotionally honest, and it’s equal parts poignant and devastating. I️ listed Should Have Known Better because I️ think it has that musical complexity you’re looking for. The whole album is very stripped back, but I️ think you’ll find that Should Have Known Better is striking and pretty dynamic, especially during and after the bridge section.

• Vesuvius: This song, and the whole Age of Adz album, reaches instrumental heights/styles that might stray far from what you’re looking for, but once you delve into Sufjan’s discography, you’ll find there’s definitely a golden thread running through all of it. I️’m including Vesuvius because it’s the easiest entry into the album and it reflects some of the musical and lyrical aspects you’re looking for.

• Wallowa Lake Monster: An outtake from Carrie and Lowell, this song embodies pretty much everything that made that album excellent, with maybe a bit more emphasis on his ethereal/ambient tendencies. • Seven Swans: I️ recommend the whole album if you liked The Only Thing, but the title track is a great example of the grandiosity of Suf’s music. It’s definitely a slow burner, but I️ love how he builds tension throughout the track and the payoff is so worth it.

• Neptune: Planetarium is a dense album that spans so many musical ideas and styles, it can be a lot to take in. Neptune is probably the song on the album that’s closest to Sufjan’s solo material, and it features some incredibly beautiful vocals and vocal melody.

• Movement I️: In the Countenance of Kings: This is a fully-instrumental and orchestral track on The BQE album, but it’s just as impactful as some of his more known tracks. It shows how versatile Sufjan is as a composer. I’ve always felt this would fit beautifully in a film soundtrack.
