Hi I want to upgrade from an Intel P4 socket 775 processor to a dual core processor. What are the factors I need to consider on upgrading.? Like power etc.?

Or is any socket 775 processor compatible? I saw all these Nm ratings etc. Like 35nm 45nm what is this aswell???? Specs: Intel Pentium 4 CPU @ 3.06Ghz (i know.) First you should have to find out the exact list of CPU's supported by your MB. You shouldn't be very optimistic about the upgrade posibility, because you only have an Intel 915P chipset (is about the same thing i'm having: Gigabyte GA 8i915P Duo). I suggest to find out for yourself on the Gigabyte site, what kind of CPU's are supported by MB's with similar chipset.

I'm only guessing that are no dual core CPU's supported, but.you'll see more exactly. Don't matter if they are made on 90nm, 65 or 45. It's the chipset limitting your options.

Wellthanks so far I don't have a budget, i'm 14 and I don't have a job so no go there I am asking my mum and dad to pay for the CPU. It may seem like a waste of money but I thought I should future proof the CPU, seeing that I saw a PC the other day at 700GBP with a 2.4Ghz Quad core CPU. I paid 600GBP 3years ago for this PC. So any other ideas of speeding it up? I already have 2.5GB of RAM and I do video editing and surfing the net, watching videos, playing about with photo editing and sometimes a spot of gaming.

Some of my earliest experiences were with Slackard-Hell computers. Undersized PSUs and proprietary components were among their many vices.

I'm not sure what to suggest here as far as extending the life of this machine. It seems to me that the limited benefits will not be worth the cost. If you have a budget for a new system, post it and I'm sure you'll get some suggestions. The following build is a bottom-dollar AMD build.
